1. Overview

Benalmádena Pueblo is the historic centre of Benalmádena and one of the best places in the municipality to experience the traditional character of an Andalusian mountain village.

The village is known for its whitewashed houses, narrow streets, colourful flowers and small squares, with much of its traditional character carefully preserved.

At the centre of the village is Plaza de España, while Calle Real provides one of the main routes through the old part of Benalmádena.

Although Benalmádena Pueblo is relatively small, there is plenty to see, including historic buildings, gardens, viewpoints, shops, cafés and restaurants.

It is also an excellent starting point for exploring some of the attractions around the upper part of Benalmádena.

Benalmádena Pueblo is located inland from Benalmádena Costa, on the lower slopes of the Sierra de Mijas.

The village is higher than the coastal resorts, so some areas also provide excellent views towards the Mediterranean.

3. Opening Times

Benalmádena Pueblo is a living village rather than a single attraction, so there are no general opening times.

The streets, squares and public areas can be explored throughout the day.

Individual attractions, museums, churches, shops, cafés and restaurants have their own opening times.

It is worth checking the opening times of any particular attraction you want to visit before travelling, particularly outside the main summer season.

The Museo de Arte Precolombino Felipe Orlando is particularly unusual, containing more than 700 pre-Columbian pieces together with around 120 pieces relating to local archaeology. Admission is free. 

The village also hosts cultural events and activities throughout the year, adding to its lively atmosphere beyond the main tourist season. 

5. How to Get There

By bus:

Local bus services connect Benalmádena Pueblo with the coastal areas and Arroyo de la Miel. Services include routes such as the M-103 and other local connections. 

By car:

Driving is one of the easiest ways to reach the village, particularly if you are planning to visit several attractions around Benalmádena Pueblo.

On foot:

Walking from the coast is possible but involves a considerable uphill climb, so most visitors will prefer to use the bus, car or taxi.

The village is also included on some organised tours and sightseeing excursions around Benalmádena.

6. Parking

There are parking areas and spaces around Benalmádena Pueblo, although some of the streets in the historic centre are narrow and are not suitable for parking.

It is generally easier to leave your car in one of the parking areas around the village and explore the historic centre on foot.

Parking can become busier during weekends, festivals and the main summer season, so arriving earlier can make finding a convenient space easier.

7. Tips for Visiting

Allow at least two hours to explore the village properly.

Wear comfortable shoes as the streets can be steep and uneven in places.

Take your time rather than trying to see everything quickly.

Explore the smaller side streets away from the main road.

Visit Plaza de España and look for the statue of La Niña de Benalmádena.

Take a walk through the Jardines del Muro.

Don't forget your camera as the whitewashed streets and flower displays provide plenty of photographs.

9. Overall Experience

Benalmádena Pueblo is very different from the resort atmosphere of Benalmádena Costa and is well worth the journey up from the coast. Its whitewashed streets, flowers, traditional buildings and small squares give it the feel of a classic Andalusian village, while its elevated position provides a completely different perspective of the municipality.

It is not a place that needs to be rushed. The best way to experience the Pueblo is to wander through the streets, explore the squares and gardens, stop for a coffee or meal and take in the atmosphere.

Our tip: Don't just drive up to Benalmádena Pueblo, take a quick look around Plaza de España and leave. Give yourself a couple of hours to explore the back streets and gardens. If you have a car, combine the visit with the nearby Colomares Castle and Buddhist Stupa to make a really good day out in the hills above Benalmádena.
