Lent: March is a quite month for festivals and fairs on the Costa del Sol. This is mainly down to Lent. The mainly Catholic community take religion very seriously and Lent is the time of fasting and abstinence. Religion makes up for most of the festival's on the Costa del Sol. Lent start's on Ash Wednesday and finishes before Easter. Lent Dates for 2019 18-03-2019 to 18-04-2019.
The carnival at Bemalmadena begins just before the start of lent. The carnival starts with he crowning of the drag queen and ends with the burning of the lizard on Santa Anne beach. Most of the activities happen in the Plaza de la Mezquita in Benalmadena. 2021dates to be confirmed
La Cazuela de la Abuela This event takes place in Fuengirola every year. It starts on a Friday and lasts for 2 weeks finishing on a Sunday. Its a food competition between around 70 participating restaurants. The restaurants have to provide 1 tapas and 1 drink for 2 Euro. You need to collect a passport from the tourist information centre to take part and get the passport stamped after every meal. You then rate the meal. The passport is limited to 5 goes so pick up a few. When completed hand back to the tourist information centre and the winner is announced after the event closes. This is a great way to try out new bars and local foods for only 2 Euro per meal.

Torremolinos carnival. This is a great time to be in Torremolinos. Every year the carnival takes place just befor the start of lent. Most of the events take place in the Plaza de la Nogalera in the centre of Torremolinos. On the Saturday a hugh tent is erected in the Plaza and events take place all day there. On the Sunday the carnival is brought to an end with the burning of the Sardina and the beach. 2021 dates to be confirmed
