The Alcazaba of Málaga is one of the city's most important historical landmarks and one of the best-preserved Moorish fortresses in Spain. Built in the 11th century, this impressive palace-fortress combines beautiful gardens, historic courtyards, and spectacular views over Málaga, making it a must-visit attraction for anyone exploring the city.

More information on the Alcazaba


1. Overview

The Alcazaba was constructed during the Muslim rule of Andalucía and served as both a palace and a military fortress. Built into the hillside below Castillo de Gibralfaro, it features defensive walls, elegant courtyards, fountains, and beautifully landscaped gardens. Today it is one of Málaga's most visited attractions and offers a fascinating insight into the city's Moorish history.

The Alcazaba is located in the heart of Málaga city centre, next to the Roman Theatre.

Its central location makes it easy to visit alongside many of Málaga's other major attractions.

3. Opening Times & Accessibility

The Alcazaba is open throughout the year, Summer: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Winter: 09:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Mondays the elevator does not work.The lower sections are generally accessible, but visitors should expect cobbled paths, steps, and some steep inclines as they explore the fortress.  Entry 2.20 euro

4. Parking

There are several public car parks within a short walk of the Alcazaba, including parking around the port, Plaza de la Marina, and the city centre. If you don't mind a walk there is plenty of free parking on the west side promenade see parking for more information and directions.

If travelling by train or bus, the Alcazaba is approximately a 15 to 20-minute walk from Málaga central station and only a few minutes from many city centre bus stops.

5. How to Get There

By Train:
Take the Cercanías train to Málaga Central Station before walking through the city centre. its about a 15 minute walk.

On Foot:
The Alcazaba is easily reached from Málaga Cathedral, the port, Calle Larios, and many of the city's main attractions.

  • Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as there are steps and uneven cobbled paths.
  • Allow at least one to two hours to explore the fortress.
  • Consider purchasing a combined ticket with Castillo de Gibralfaro for the best value.
  • Don't miss the viewpoints overlooking the Roman Theatre and Málaga Port.
