The Cueva del Tesoro is one of the Costa del Sol's most unusual attractions, located just outside Málaga at La Cala del Moral in Rincón de la Victoria. This fascinating cave was formed by the action of the sea and contains underground chambers, rock formations, lakes and archaeological remains, as well as a centuries-old legend about a hidden treasure. Visitors can explore the cave using an audio guide, discovering its geological features and prehistoric history as they make their way through the underground galleries. 

1. Overview

The Cueva del Tesoro, or Treasure Cave, is one of the most unusual natural attractions near Málaga. It forms part of the cave system at El Cantal in Rincón de la Victoria and is famous for its marine origin, unusual geological formations and long history of human occupation.

Unlike most caves, the Cueva del Tesoro was formed partly through the action of the sea. The cave contains a series of galleries and chambers, including areas with underground lakes, stalactites and other limestone formations.

The cave also has considerable archaeological importance. Evidence of prehistoric human activity and rock art has been discovered in the wider cave system, with recent research identifying very ancient human traces and Paleolithic artwork. 

The cave's name comes from the legend of a hidden treasure supposedly concealed inside by the Almoravid ruler Tasufin ibn Ali. Although visitors shouldn't expect to discover a chest of gold, the treasure story has become an important part of the cave's history and appeal.

The Cueva del Tesoro is located in La Cala del Moral, within the municipality of Rincón de la Victoria, approximately 10 kilometres east of Málaga city centre.

The cave is particularly easy to combine with a visit to La Cala del Moral, Rincón de la Victoria and the beaches along Málaga's eastern coastline.

3. Opening Times

The Cueva del Tesoro operates seasonal opening hours.

Winter season – 1 October to 30 April:
10:00am – 1:00pm
3:00pm – 5:00pm

Summer season – 1 May to 30 September:
10:30am – 1:00pm
4:30pm – 7:00pm

The facility closes between the morning and afternoon sessions.

The cave is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 and 6 January.

Opening times can change, so visitors should check the official information before travelling.

The cave contains a fascinating mixture of natural and archaeological features, including:

The cave's archaeological importance is also becoming increasingly recognised. Recent scientific research has identified Paleolithic rock art in the caves of the El Cantal complex dating back tens of thousands of years. 

The visit is generally self-guided using an audio guide which visitors can download to their own mobile phone. 

5. How to Get There

By car:
The Cueva del Tesoro is easily reached from Málaga by following the A-7 east towards Rincón de la Victoria and La Cala del Moral. Follow local signs for the cave once in the area.

By bus:
Local buses connect Málaga with La Cala del Moral and Rincón de la Victoria. From the surrounding area, the cave is within walking distance, although the approach includes some uphill sections.

By taxi:
A taxi from Málaga provides a straightforward way to reach the cave, particularly for visitors travelling as a family or group.

On foot:
The cave is not within practical walking distance of Málaga city centre, but it can be combined with a visit to La Cala del Moral and the surrounding coastline.

6. Parking

The Cueva del Tesoro has visitor parking available close to the entrance. 

Parking can become busier during weekends, school holidays and the summer months, so arriving earlier in the day is advisable.

If you are combining the cave with La Cala del Moral or Rincón de la Victoria, there are also parking options around the town and seafront.

7. Tips for Visiting

• Allow around 1–1½ hours for a relaxed visit.
• Wear comfortable shoes as there are steps and uneven sections inside the cave.
• Take a light jacket as underground temperatures are cooler than outside.
• Download the audio guide before or at the start of your visit.
• Bring headphones if you want to use the audio guide comfortably. 
• Check opening times before travelling because they change seasonally.
• Consider booking in advance during busy periods.
• Remember that the cave is not completely accessible to people with reduced mobility.
• An elevator provides access to the first chamber, but the remainder of the cave contains stairs. 
• Combine the visit with La Cala del Moral or Rincón de la Victoria.
• If visiting with children, look out for the staged theatrical visits held on the last Sunday of each month.

The Cueva del Tesoro is one of the Costa del Sol's more unusual attractions and makes an interesting change from Málaga's beaches, museums and historic monuments. The combination of underground lakes, unusual rock formations, prehistoric history and the legend of buried treasure gives the visit plenty of character.

Its location also makes it particularly useful as part of a day exploring Málaga's eastern coastline. A visit to the cave can easily be combined with La Cala del Moral, Rincón de la Victoria and the beaches and promenades along this section of the coast.

For families, the cave provides something different from a normal day at the beach, while visitors interested in history and archaeology will find the more recent discoveries particularly fascinating. The fact that it is a marine-origin cave makes it even more unusual. 

Our tip: Don't visit expecting a huge cave system like some of Spain's better-known show caves. What makes the Cueva del Tesoro special is its marine origin, underground lakes, prehistoric history and the treasure legend. Combine it with a visit to La Cala del Moral or Rincón de la Victoria and it makes a very worthwhile half-day trip from Málaga.
