La Concepción Historic Botanical Garden is one of Spain's most important tropical and subtropical gardens and covers a large historic estate on the northern outskirts of Málaga.

The garden was created in 1855 by the Marquis and Marchioness of Casa Loring and was later expanded by the Echevarría family. Over the years, the estate became famous for its collection of exotic plants from around the world, helped by Málaga's mild Mediterranean climate.

Today, visitors can explore winding paths through dense vegetation, palm groves, ponds, fountains, viewpoints and historic buildings. The combination of lush planting and historic features makes La Concepción feel very different from the rest of Málaga.

The garden is particularly impressive during spring when many plants are flowering, although its tropical and subtropical vegetation means there is something interesting to see throughout much of the year.

La Concepción Historic Botanical Garden is located approximately 5 kilometres north of Málaga's historic centre, close to the Guadalmedina River and the A-45 motorway.

• 15 minutes' drive from Málaga city centre
• 20 minutes' drive from Málaga María Zambrano station
• 25 minutes' drive from Málaga Airport

The garden is outside the main tourist centre, so travelling by car, taxi or bus is generally more convenient than walking from the historic centre.

3. Opening Times

La Concepción Historic Botanical Garden is open throughout the year, although opening times vary between the summer and winter seasons.

Summer opening:
Generally Tuesday to Sunday, with extended opening hours.

Winter opening:
Generally Tuesday to Sunday, with shorter opening hours.

Monday:
Normally closed, except on certain public holidays or special occasions.

Opening times can change seasonally, so visitors should check the official garden website before travelling.

The garden is normally closed on 25 December and 1 January.

By taxi:
A taxi from central Málaga provides a convenient way to reach the gardens, particularly for visitors travelling as a group.

On foot:
Walking from Málaga's historic centre is not recommended for most visitors because of the distance and the roads involved.

If travelling without a car, check the current Málaga bus services before setting out.

La Concepción has a dedicated visitor car park close to the entrance.

Parking is particularly useful because the botanical garden is outside Málaga's main tourist centre and public transport connections can be less convenient than those serving the historic centre.

During weekends, holidays and busy periods, the car park can become busy, so arriving earlier in the day is recommended.

• Allow at least 2–3 hours to explore the gardens properly.
• Wear comfortable walking shoes as there are paths, slopes and steps throughout the estate.
• Take water, particularly during the hotter summer months.
• Visit in spring if you want to see many of the plants and flowers at their best.
• Take a camera as there are numerous excellent photography opportunities.
• Don't rush through the historic garden; some of the most interesting areas are away from the main entrance.
• Look out for the historic buildings and decorative features as well as the plants.
• Take advantage of the shaded areas during hot weather.
• Check opening times before travelling as they change according to the season.
• Allow extra time if you want to explore the garden's longer walking routes.

Our tip: Allow more time than you think you will need. La Concepción is much larger and more interesting than the entrance area suggests, and the best parts are discovered by following the paths deeper into the gardens. Visit on a cooler morning if possible, particularly during the summer months.
