Parque del Oeste is one of Málaga's largest and most unusual urban parks, covering almost 74,000 square metres in the Carretera de Cádiz district close to the Mediterranean coast. Built around a large lake, the park combines gardens, water, sculptures, wildlife, children's play areas and sports facilities, making it much more than a conventional city park. With its ducks, turtles, exotic-looking sculptures and peaceful walking areas, Parque del Oeste is particularly popular with local families and provides visitors with a chance to see a more everyday side of Málaga away from the main tourist centre. 

1. Overview

Parque del Oeste is a large public park in Málaga's Carretera de Cádiz district, close to the beaches and western side of the city.

The park was inaugurated in 1992 and has developed into an important green and recreational space for the surrounding neighbourhood. It covers approximately 74,000 square metres and combines landscaped gardens with water, vegetation, wildlife, sports facilities and public art. 

The centrepiece of the park is the Gran Lago, a large lake covering around 11,000 square metres. The lake is surrounded by paths and gardens and provides a home for ducks, turtles and other wildlife.

One of the park's most unusual features is its collection of around 45 sculptures, many of which are imaginative and mythical creatures created by German artist Stefan von Reiswitz. These give the park the feel of an open-air art gallery as well as a public garden.

Parque del Oeste is located in the Carretera de Cádiz district in western Málaga, close to the Mediterranean coast and Málaga's western beaches.

• 10 minutes' walk from Playa de la Misericordia
• 10 minutes' walk from the seafront
• 15 minutes' walk from the Automobile and Fashion Museum
• 15 minutes' drive from Málaga Airport

The park is particularly easy to combine with a visit to Málaga's western beaches and promenade.

3. Opening Times

Parque del Oeste is open throughout the year, although opening times change according to the season.

Summer:
Generally 7:30am – 12:30am

Rest of the year:
Generally 7:45am – 10:00pm

Opening times can change, so it is worth checking before visiting. 

The park itself is free to enter.

4. What You'll Find in Parque del Oeste

Parque del Oeste offers a surprisingly large variety of things to see and do, including:

• ducks and other water birds
• turtles
• landscaped gardens
• more than 20,000 m² of green areas
• around 45 sculptures
• fountains and water features
• children's play areas
• a dog park
• views towards the surrounding neighbourhood

The sculptures are one of the park's most distinctive features. Mythical and fantasy figures including fauns, mermaids, dolphins, minotaurs and unicorns are positioned around the gardens, creating unexpected discoveries as you walk around. 

The park also has more than 4,000 m² dedicated to sports and recreation, making it a popular place with local residents. 

5. How to Get There

By bus:
Several Málaga city bus services operate through the Carretera de Cádiz district, making the park accessible from central Málaga and surrounding neighbourhoods.

By train:
The closest useful Cercanías stations are on the C1 line serving Málaga and the western Costa del Sol. From the station, visitors can continue by local bus or taxi.

On foot:
Parque del Oeste is too far from Málaga's historic centre for most visitors to walk to comfortably, but it is within walking distance of the western seafront and beaches.

By car:
The park is easily reached from Málaga's western side and is close to the MA-20 road.

It can be combined particularly well with Playa de la Misericordia and Málaga's western promenade.

6. Parking

There is street parking around the surrounding neighbourhood, although finding a space can become more difficult at busy times.

The park is located in a densely populated part of Málaga, so parking may require some patience, particularly during evenings and weekends.

If you are combining the visit with the beach and promenade, it may be worth finding a parking space once and exploring the area on foot.

7. Tips for Visiting

• Allow around 1–2 hours to explore the park at a relaxed pace.
• Walk around the lake rather than simply crossing through the park.
• Look out for the unusual sculptures hidden around the gardens.
• Take a camera as the sculptures and lake provide some unusual photographs.
• If you enjoy outdoor exercise, there are numerous sports and fitness facilities available.

9. Overall Experience

Parque del Oeste is one of Málaga's more unusual attractions and provides a very different experience from the city's historic monuments and central parks. The large lake, wildlife, gardens and collection of fantasy sculptures give it a character all of its own.

It is also a good example of the everyday Málaga that many tourists never see. Local residents use the park for walking, exercising, meeting friends, children's activities and simply relaxing beside the water. 

For visitors, the park is particularly worthwhile when combined with Málaga's western beaches. You can spend some time exploring the gardens and sculptures before continuing towards the seafront for a walk along the promenade or a meal at one of the nearby restaurants.

Our tip: Don't expect another Parque de Málaga. Parque del Oeste is much more informal and local, and that's exactly what makes it interesting. Walk around the lake and look out for the strange and wonderful sculptures as you go — you never quite know what you'll find around the next corner.
