1. Overview

Málaga has become well known for its impressive street art, with some of the city's largest and most colourful murals found in the Soho district, also known as the Barrio de las Artes or Arts District. What was once an overlooked part of the city has been transformed into an open-air gallery featuring large-scale works by Spanish and international urban artists.

The Soho area is particularly associated with the MAUS (Málaga Arte Urbano Soho) project, which brought contemporary street art to the walls and buildings around the district. Huge murals can be found throughout the streets, often covering entire sides of buildings and creating some of the most unusual photo opportunities in central Málaga.

Although Soho is the main area for street art, murals and urban artwork can also be found in other parts of Málaga. Exploring the area on foot gives visitors a chance to see a very different side of the city, away from the traditional historic attractions.

2. Location & Address

The main concentration of Málaga's street art is in the Soho district, located between the historic centre, Alameda Principal, the Guadalmedina River and Málaga Port.

There is no single address for the street art as the murals are spread throughout the neighbourhood.

• 15 minutes’ walk from Málaga María Zambrano train station

The central location makes Soho easy to include in a walking tour of Málaga, particularly when combining it with the port and historic centre.

3. Opening Times

There are no opening times for Málaga's street art as the murals are displayed on public buildings and streets throughout the Soho district.

The best time to explore is during daylight hours when the murals are easier to see and photograph.

Some individual galleries, shops, cafés and businesses in Soho have their own opening times, but these are separate from the street art itself.

4. What You’ll Find in Málaga's Street Art District

Soho offers a mixture of large-scale murals and smaller examples of urban art, including:

• artwork created as part of the MAUS project
• smaller pieces hidden around side streets
• independent shops and businesses

Some of the best-known artists associated with the Soho street art project include Obey, D*Face and Roa, whose large-scale works have helped establish the area as one of Málaga's best-known urban art districts.

The artwork can change over time, with new pieces appearing and existing murals sometimes being painted over or replaced. This means that returning visitors may discover something different.

5. How to Get There

By train:
Take the Cercanías Málaga C1 line to Málaga Centro–Alameda station. The main Soho street art area is only a short walk from the station.

By bus:
Several Málaga city bus routes stop around Alameda Principal and the central area. From there, Soho is within easy walking distance.

On foot:
Soho is particularly easy to reach from Málaga's historic centre. From Plaza de la Marina or Calle Larios, walk towards Alameda Principal and continue towards the Guadalmedina River.

The area can easily be combined with Muelle Uno, Málaga Port, Calle Larios, Málaga Cathedral and the historic centre.

6. Parking

Driving and finding parking in central Málaga can be difficult, particularly during busy periods.

The easiest option is usually to use one of the central underground car parks and explore Soho on foot.

There are parking options around Muelle Uno, Málaga Port and the city centre, all within walking distance of the street art district.

7. Tips for Visiting

• Explore Soho on foot rather than simply driving through the area.
• Visit during daylight hours when the murals are easiest to see.
• Allow around 1–2 hours to explore the main street art areas.
• Take your time as some of the smaller works are easy to miss.
• Look down side streets and around the backs and sides of buildings.
• Take a camera as many of the larger murals make excellent photographs.
• Combine Soho with a visit to Muelle Uno and Málaga Port.
• Continue towards the historic centre for Calle Larios, Málaga Cathedral and the Alcazaba.
• Don't expect every mural to remain in the same place forever; the street art scene changes over time.
• Wear comfortable shoes as the best way to see the artwork is by walking around the neighbourhood.
• Look out for smaller pieces as well as the huge murals – some of the most interesting artwork can be found away from the main streets.

Málaga's street art provides a completely different experience from the city's historic monuments and traditional tourist attractions. The huge murals around Soho have transformed the neighbourhood into an outdoor art gallery and provide a fascinating glimpse of Málaga's modern and creative side.

The best way to experience the area is simply to walk around without rushing. The larger murals are easy to spot, but exploring the smaller streets can reveal additional artwork, cafés, independent businesses and parts of Soho that many visitors miss.

For visitors who enjoy photography, contemporary art or simply seeing something different, Soho is well worth adding to a Málaga itinerary. Its location also makes it particularly easy to combine with the port, Muelle Uno and the historic centre.

Our tip: Don't treat Soho as somewhere to visit for one particular mural. Give yourself time to wander around the streets and look for the artwork. The fun is discovering the murals as you explore, and then continuing towards the port or historic centre to make a full walking route out of your visit.
