Information on The Mirador De Juanar

1. Overview

The Mirador de Juanar walk is one of the easiest ways to experience the mountain scenery surrounding Marbella without committing to a long or particularly strenuous hike.

The walk is located in Sierra Blanca, in the mountains above Marbella, and starts close to the Refugio de Juanar. The route passes through Mediterranean vegetation and woodland before reaching viewpoints overlooking the coast.

There are two particularly interesting viewpoints along the Juanar–Puerto Marbella route: Mirador del Corzo, which looks towards Ojén and the coast towards Mijas and Fuengirola, and Mirador del Macho Montés, which provides spectacular views across Marbella and the Mediterranean. 

The area is also home to wildlife including the Spanish ibex (cabra montés), and the mountain scenery provides a complete contrast to Marbella's beaches, Old Town and busy coastal areas.

The Mirador de Juanar is located in the mountains above Marbella, close to the Refugio de Juanar and within the municipality of Ojén.

The walking route is reached from the A-355 road between Marbella and Monda, taking the turning towards the Refugio de Juanar. From near the refuge, a forest track leads to the start of the walking route. 

It is approximately:

• 20–25 minutes' drive from central Marbella
• 25–30 minutes' drive from Puerto Banús
• 30 minutes' drive from Ojén
• 45–50 minutes' drive from Fuengirola

The journey itself is part of the experience, as the road climbs into the mountains and the scenery changes dramatically from the coast.

3. Opening Times

The walking route is an outdoor attraction and has no normal opening hours.

There is no admission charge to walk the route.

For safety, it is best to visit during daylight and check the weather forecast before setting out, particularly during periods of extreme heat, rain or strong winds.

4. What You'll Find on the Walk

The walk offers a mixture of mountain scenery, woodland and spectacular coastal views, including:

• Mirador del Corzo
• Mirador del Macho Montés
• views over Marbella
• views towards Ojén
• Mediterranean woodland
• pine trees
• cork oaks and other native vegetation
• the Juanar olive grove

The Mirador del Corzo is at around 881 metres and provides views towards Ojén, the Costa del Sol and the surrounding mountains. 

The Mirador del Macho Montés is higher, at more than 900 metres, and provides an impressive panorama of Marbella and the Mediterranean. On exceptionally clear days, views can extend towards Gibraltar and even the coast of Africa. 

5. How to Get There

By car:

Driving is by far the easiest way to reach the walk.

From Marbella, take the A-355 towards Ojén/Monda and follow the signs for Refugio de Juanar. The official route information directs visitors from kilometre 23.8 towards the refuge, with the walking route beginning near the forest track shortly before the refuge. 

On foot:

This is a mountain walk rather than a route that can realistically be reached on foot from central Marbella.

There are longer hiking routes connecting Marbella with Juanar, including the official Marbella–Cruz de Juanar PR-A 169, but these are considerably more demanding than simply driving to the Juanar area and doing the viewpoint walk. 

6. Parking

There is parking available around the Refugio de Juanar and the trail entrance, although spaces can become busy at weekends and during periods of good weather.

The official route information explains that vehicles are left at the gate where the forest track begins, with the walk continuing from there. 

If you are planning to visit at a busy time, arriving earlier in the day is advisable.

7. Tips for Visiting

• Wear proper walking shoes, even though the shorter viewpoint route is relatively easy.
• Take plenty of water, particularly during the summer.
• Start early during hot weather.
• Allow extra time to stop and enjoy the viewpoints.
• Take a camera — the coastal views are excellent.
• Check the weather before setting off.
• If you want a longer challenge, look at the routes towards Cruz de Juanar and La Concha.
• Don't underestimate the heat in summer simply because the walk is relatively short.

9. Overall Experience

The Mirador de Juanar walk is a great option for visitors who want to experience the natural side of Marbella without spending an entire day on a difficult mountain hike. The short route through the woodland is enjoyable in its own right, but the real reward comes when you reach the viewpoints and see just how far above the coast you have climbed.

It is also a reminder of how close Marbella is to some spectacular mountain scenery. Within a relatively short drive from the beaches and Old Town, you can be surrounded by pine forests, mountain trails and wildlife with Marbella and the Mediterranean spread out below you. 

Our tip: Don't think of Juanar as just a walking destination for serious hikers. The shorter viewpoint walk is a great half-day trip from Marbella, particularly if you want to see something completely different from the coast. Go on a clear day, take your time and don't rush the viewpoints — the views are the main attraction.
